Making his debut on Rollin Records with the relentless âApex Predatorâ, Perth producer GAM3OV3R (Peter Donaldson) brings a decade of production experience and an uncompromising approach to neurofunk drum & bass. Drawing inspiration from video games, heavy metal, and neurofunk pioneers Black Sun Empire and Audio, GAM3OV3R crafts tracks that hit with raw, dark energy, the kind that makes you want to absolutely lose yourself.
Inspired by the popular battle royale game Apex Legends, this debut release showcases GAM3OV3Râs love of heavy wubs, intricate drum patterns, and the kind of production precision that can only come from years of dedication to the craft. Having studied at SAE and immersed himself in the drum & bass community through resources like DNB Academy, GAM3OV3R has honed his skills with one clear goal: to create music that captures the intensity he loves from both metal and neurofunk.
In this interview, we dive into GAM3OV3Râs journey from experimenting with different genres to finding his true home in neurofunk, the creative process behind âApex Predatorâ, and his plans to make waves in the drum & bass scene.
How did you first get into producing drum & bass? Was there a specific moment that made you think âI need to make this soundâ?
I initially started with several different genres to get a feel of what I liked. I started about 10 years ago. Iâve been mixing for longer and I always tend to gravitate more to DnB. I love the heavy wubs and I also love heavy music. When I started listening to neurofunk it really glued to me as I love metal and heavy intricate music.
Where does the GAM3OV3R name come from? Is there a story behind it?
Itâs nothing too cryptic. I love games and all my tracks have samples or themes behind video game series I like.
Walk us through how you developed your production skills. What was your learning process like?
A big one for me is YouTube videos like DNB Academy and many others. The community is incredible and they love sharing. I also studied at SAE.
âApex Predatorâ is your first release with Rollin Records. What inspired you to create this track, and why did it feel like the right one to debut with the label?
I was inspired by one of my favourite video games, Apex Legends. Goes without saying my first DnB track should be the first debut.
How did you approach the production of this track? Walk us through your creative process from initial idea to finished master.
I began with a decent drum roll which in my tracks is the foundations of it all, build a nice hook and then expanded from there, then just laid down bass, and then all the effects and ambience.
What draws you to the drum & bass sound specifically? What about the genre excites you?
The raw dark energy. It just makes you want to absolutely lose yourself.
Who are some of your biggest musical influences? Anyone thatâs shaped the way you make music?
I have many but if I was to pick 2, it would probably be Black Sun Empire and Audio. They are pioneers of neurofunk and I adore their style.
What are you listening to in the studio these days? Do you find inspiration outside of drum & bass?
Iâm always branching out but recently European neurofunk really tickles the ears. I also love metal and hard techno. Anything that gets you moving.
Whatâs next for you? Are there more tracks in the pipeline, and where do you see GAM3OV3R going?
Iâm going to focus on getting out some more DnB. I have already started writing a new track ;). I would love to also play some more festivals and get my name out there.
Any collaborations or experiments youâre thinking about exploring down the line?
Iâm always open to collabs. Hit me up!
